Building a quality custom cabinet requires vision, preparation, and a lot of patience. Getting it done right can help increase the appeal and value of your home. Here are some tips from our carpenters who specialize in high-end custom cabinets.
– Safety First
It is important to have glasses or goggles worn whenever power tools are in use. The actions this is most important for is when chiseling, sanding, scraping or overhead hammering. Wear ear protectors when using power tools. Be mindful of loose hair and clothing- you do not want it to get caught in tools. A respirator or face mask can protect you when sanding or sawing or using substances with toxic fumes. Use the correct tool for the job, keep blades sharp and discard broken tools. Secure anything you are going to drill, shape or saw. Keep a First Aid Kit on hand whenever you are working with tools. Read the owner’s manual for all tools and know the proper use of each, especially be mindful of keeping tools out of reach of small children and unplug them when not in use. Finally know where your hand placement is, and be careful not to warm yourself with the power tools.
– Know and Understand Your Choice Of Materials
There are two major types of cabinets to consider when looking to buy or build new cabinets. There are face frame cabinets and frameless. The one you prefer will be based on the style you are going for in your space. Hardware and hardware free is another consideration that impacts the style.Another is color and material. The type of material will help set the tone for the space, from real wood floating shelves, to see through cabinets, to traditional cabinets with beadboard. Depending on the size of your space will determine if you space can handle the heavier looking materials which could otherwise make your space look smaller.
– Accurate Measurements
Have you ever heard the phrase measure twice, cut once? It is important to triple check in many cases, because you start cutting or buying your materials to make sure you have enough of each piece and it will fit properly into the space once assembled. Take your time to make sure it’s done correctly. Do not rush to complete them, and make a costly mistake.
